My 10 minute blogsite setup . . . .yeah right!

WARNING! – This post contains some  UGLY TECHNICAL DETAILS . . . . . .which some readers may find mind bogglingly incomprehensible . . . . . (Do you remember when life used to be simple?)

So it said on the tin . . . . setup your blogsite in 10 minutes . . . . . .  .

And to be honest it did only take a few minutes to download, customise and upload. . . . . . . .

HOWEVER . . . . .

There I was in my office – see photo

in the office . . . .

in the office . . . .

(well I can dream can’t I ?)

and I was thinking . . . . I’ll just pop this blog online , upload my first post and order a fresh coconut juice and lime before the sunsets . . . . . . . . . . .WHEN

I realised that my DOMAIN NAME  JonneyJay.com was registered at GoDaddy.com and that I will have to Login there and change my NAMESERVERS to point to my new HOSTING company.

OK so that took a few minutes to do and another few minutes to PROPAGATE. (To send that name to the rest of the internet DNS servers so people will find my site at its new hosting home – and GoDaddy is really fast at that)

Then I read another MWA (MarketingWithAlex) student’s blog where he mentioned that Mike Filsaime had problems with GoDaddy years ago when he first started because someone had complained about a spam they got and Mike had problems getting his domain name back after they shut it down.

Well I have lots of Domain names registered with GoDaddy and have used them for years and always found them to be fantastic on the customer service etc. I really didn’t want to have to go through the rigmarole of changing REGISTRARS (it just takes ages) so I decided to phone them to ask them about this issue.

I didn’t mention Mike Filsaime but told him I heard they shut you down if they get a complaint. NO WE DON’T they said UNLESS we are ordered to do so by a court. And it may have happened years ago before the days of DOUBLE OPT-IN. So he told me that it is now the law and you MUST USE DOUBLE OPT-IN

He also recommended that we keep our own separate copies of all the optin confirmations as these are our proof that we are not sending SPAM. And on that point we also need a mailing address to put on outgoing emails sent to our list. Hmmm . . . . . . .

So then the very nice chap at GoDaddy told me I should read these 3 pages ( Great bedtime reading if can’t get to sleep . . . .guaranteed to send you off in no time!)

GoDaddy SPAM POLICY

GoDaddy Universal Terms and Conditions

Domain Name Registration Agreement

(Similar wordings apply to any Registrar)

Needless to say the SUN was well set by the time I read that lot. . . . . . .

Moving swiftly on  . . . . . . . .to the Blogsite  SQL Database (SQL=Structured Query Language)

So I then Logged in to my new HOSTING account and added a SQL Database to my website.

This has a Database Name / Username / Password.  Then you need to put these into the config file before you UPLOAD your SEO BLOGSITE.

This makes your blogsite work – allows new posts – allows readers to comment – and all that really depressing technical stuff. But BLISSFULLY it is all done without you even knowing it is happening. All you have to do is add the Database name username and password ONCE. So it is really easy to do.

As you can imagine it was too late to finish this all in one day and then the next day I just had so much to catch up on and then on the next day . . . . . . . . .

I finally wrote and uploaded my first blog post! Phew!

Now it is much easier!

But I’ll tell you a bit more about adding posts in another post soon.

Meanwhile back at the beach . . . . . . . . . . . .
